One of the scientific research papers that the CETI team presented at the Portuguese Reproductive Medicine Congress on 9 October 2010 won the award for the best free communication: Oocyte Secretory Factors Receptors in Human Cumulus Cells: expression and cell localization related to Woman’s Age.
Part of a research area whose purpose is to identify biomarkers of egg quality that are useful in the selection of eggs for fertilising, this paper showed, for the first time, the presence in the cells around the eggs of receptors of important growth factors originating in the eggs. In addition, it showed that their expression decreases as women get older, which may compromise their fertility.
One of the research projects developed by the CETI team in cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine of Porto University won an important international award. Projects were presented by 14 countries. This award, called the Grant for fertility innovation, whose value is in excess of EUR 100,000 euros, was won by Professors João Luís Silva Carvalho and Henrique Almeida and will contribute to a project that has been under development for 5 years and which, using biomolecular technology, is intended to create new methods for assessing and selecting the eggs used in MAR techniques, thus improving the success rates of these treatments.
